A Buzz for Summer Time – Kids & Bees

School is out, the weather is beautiful and the kids are heading outside!

Like many kids, we loved playing outside in the summertime, and like many children, found bees to be a little bit scary. Here at the National Honey Board, we exist to educate children and adults alike to not fear the honeybee, as they are essential to our existence.

If you saw our recent blog post about honey bees and the many plants they pollinate, you would know that almost one-third of the U.S. diet is derived from insect-pollinated plants and honeybees are responsible for 80% of that process. Without our little buzzing friends we would not have many of our favorite snacks like almonds, blueberries and summertime watermelon.

It is common for children to come across a variety of insect habitats while playing outside, but not all ...

Sharing the Versatility of Honey – Education Events 2015

It’s been a busy couple weeks here at the National Honey Board as we hit the road to share why we are so passionate about honey – its versatility!

It was such a pleasure to share this experience with our great friends and honey experts:

  • Barb Dehn, RN, MS, NP – Nurse Practitioner
  • Marie Simmons – Award-Winning Cookbook Author
  • Mary Helen Leonard – Beauty Expert
  • Brent Barkman – Third-Generation Beekeeper and Packer, Hillsboro, Kansas

With our friends and suitcases in tow, we made stops in Seattle, WA, Washington DC and Austin, TX to educate consumers on the adaptability of honey as more than a culinary staple. While it adds sweetness to our favorite sauces and adds shelf life to baked goods – allowing us to enjoy ...

April Showers Bring May Flowers – Honey Bees & Pollination

April Showers Bring May Flowers – Honey Bees & Pollination

We’ve all heard the phrase – “April showers bring May flowers” – and really, what’s better than walking into a beautiful garden and being immersed in the colors and fragrances of all the flowers surrounding you? You can thank a honey bee for that!

Did you know that honey bees are a critical component of today’s agricultural market? Well it’s true! Our honey bees do so much more than just create the liquid gold we all know and love.

In addition to making honey, honey bees also perform the vital function – a second shift as we like to call it - of pollination, or the transferring of pollen from plant to plant, thus fertilizing the plants and enabling them to bear fruit. Without the honey bees’ pollination work, the quantity and quality of many crops would be ...

Honey Beers on Tap at Craft Brewers Conference

What a difference a year makes! Last year, the National Honey Board exhibited for the first time at the Craft Brewers Conference in Denver. It was a great experience talking to brewers about using honey in their beers. By our estimation, about 25% of the brewers we spoke with were using honey.

This year’s conference and exposition were held last month in Portland, Ore., and we estimate that 75% of the brewers we spoke with were using honey in their beverages. From ales and lagers to saisons and IPAs to meads, sodas and braggots, we met countless brewers using honey because of its flavor and functionality.

Here are our Top 5 made with honey beverages we heard about at this year’s Craft Brewers Conference.
