Hives for Lives Raises Money for Cancer
Two ambitious teen-age girls from Devon, Pa., are raising money to fight cancer through their bee product business. Molly Houlahan, 15, and Carolyn Houlahan, 13, launched “Hives for Lives” three years ago after their grandfather died of cancer. Since the girls and other family members shared an interest in bee-keeping as a hobby, the sisters suggested selling their honey to raise money to fight cancer. The teen-agers have since raised more than $22,000 for the American Cancer Society.
In addition to harvesting their honey, Molly runs a “Hives for Lives” Young Business Leaders Club at her school. “Hives for Lives will go on as long as there is cancer,” said Molly. “I hope every year it will grow,” added Carolyn.
The teen-agers were recently honored with the President's Call to Service Award, given out by the President to outstanding volunteers.
More information is available on their web site at www.hivesforlives.org
Convenience the Top Factor for Consumers
When it comes to buying on-the-go foods, time-pressed Americans seeking foods they can consume quickly choose convenience over all other factors, including price, healthfulness and taste, according to On-The-Go Eating in the U.S.: Consumer, Foodservice, Retailing & Marketing Trends, a new report from Packaged Facts.
Although 65% of consumers say they try to eat healthier, 33% say they don't have time to prepare or eat healthy meals. Last fall alone, growing commutes and work days and time demands on two-working-parent and single-parent households drove 49 million Americans to fast-food solutions and 41 million to store-made, pre-cooked meals.

20 Years of Sweet Success: Looking Back
In 2007, NHB is celebrating its 20th anniversary. NHB will periodically highlight in BeeMail various milestones accomplished throughout the last 20 years.
August 1989 - NHB launches the “Bear Facts” campaign to authorize manufactures to use its logo—the honey bear guzzling honey from a jug—on products that use honey as the primary sweetener.
August 1992 -NHB develops a consumer information brochure, featuring cooking and storage tips, easy use suggestions, simple recipes, honey forms and flavors and honey facts with the headline, “Honey, chances are you’ll love me once you get to know me.”
August 1996 - NHB seizes the back-to-school opportunity to promote honey recipes for kids. NHB, with the help of the Texas Peanut Producers Board and the Washington State Apple Commission, sends a full-page four-color spread for fun and fool-proof snacks to food editors throughout the country. Snacks featured include: Nutt Honey-Bear Wraps and Apple Snacksters with Honey and Peanut Butter.
