Bee Movie: It’s Finally Show Time!
November will be an exciting month for the honey industry with Bee Movie in movie theaters beginning Nov 2! Early reviews of the movie have been positive. Now it’s time to visit your local theater, buy some popcorn, kick back and enjoy BeeMovie!
The movie is expected to generate positive publicity about beekeeping and highlight the important role bee pollination plays in plant production. For more information, visit www.beemovie.com.
NHB has launched several promotional programs tying in with the BeeMovie theme to generate positive publicity for honey.
Fun New Web Site: NHB has launched a colorful “It’s Honey Time” web site, featuring graphics from Bee Movie. The site includes a link for kids with honey snack ideas and “Real Bee Facts” and a link for Moms with honey beauty tips and recipes. The site has links to both Bee Movie and NHB.

Bee Movie Grocery Store Promotions: Many grocery store honey aisles will have more pizzaz in November with NHB produced Bee Movie themed “floor stickers” and “shelf takes” featuring the slogan “It’s Honey Time!” encouraging consumers to purchase honey. The shelf takes feature recipes using honey that appeal to kids. The promotion is designed to tap into the desire of Moms to provide natural, wholesome foods for their children and leverage children’s “pester power” to land more honey in consumers’ shopping carts. The promotions will appear in 14,000 plus stores throughout the U.S. and will run from Nov. 5 – Dec. 2.
NHB also produced Bee Movie promotional materials for producers and packers to use at farmers markets and retail settings, including hang tags, neckers, stickers and table signs.
Scholastic Bee Educational Kit: NHB, with generous funding from DreamWorks, helped develop a Scholastic educational kit for use by teachers in the classroom. “Get the Buzz on Honey Bees” is targeted toward grades three-five and provides materials to teach kids about the fascinating world of bees! The kits feature colorful Bee Movie graphics and include four bee lessons for use by educators and corresponding activities for kids. It also features a large U.S. map showing many of the crops pollinated by bees. A take-home activity includes a honey recipe and “Adopt your own Barry B. Benson at BeeMovie.com” activity.
The kits meet national standards in science and geography. The 100,000 kits were distributed to the top 34 markets in the U.S. in early October. To view the kit, visit www.scholastic.com/buzzonbees.

NHB Creates Honey Infused Recipes for Dia De Los Muertos Celebration
NHB has created recipes for traditional Dia De Los Muertos dishes using honey. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and the Mexican immigrant community living in the United States on November 1 and 2. Variations of the celebration are also observed in other Latin American countries and other parts of the world. Día de los Muertos is a tradition that celebrates the memory of dead ancestors and is a fusion of Catholic and Aztec traditions. The tradition includes families decorating altars for deceased loved ones, leaving them flowers, personal tokens and food. Some traditional Dia de los Muertos dishes include Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead), bunuelos (fried sweet pastry) and atole. Recipes for these dishes using honey, as well as more information about Dia De Los Muertos can be found at http://www.honey.com/consumers/diadelosmuertos.asp.
National Honey Board Issues Request for Production Research Proposals Studying Colony Health
NHB announces a request for research proposals regarding honey bee colony production. The goal of this research area is to help honey producers maintain colony health, while preserving honey quality. Controlling such pests as the Varroa destructor, Acarapis woodi and the small hive beetle is the primary objective of this research area; however, other projects will be considered, as well as research outside the United States. NHB will also consider proposals that research new methods, as well as combinations of existing methods to increase efficacy rates.
Approximately $50,000 has been earmarked for this study. However, the amount of funds available will depend on the number and merit of proposals accepted. Project funds will be available in 2008 and may be carried into early 2009 if necessary. The duration of the project should generally not exceed 12 months.
Research proposals should be sent to NHB on or before Dec. 31, 2007. For more information, visit http://www.honey.com/media/currentnews.asp, or contact Charlotte Jordan, project manager at (800) 553-7162.
Colony Collapse Disorder Symposium Added to ESA Annual Meeting
A late-breaking symposium, "Colony Collapse Disorder in Honey Bees: Insight Into Status, Potential Causes, and Preventive Measures," was recently added to the 55th Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America (ESA), to be held in San Diego, Dec. 9-12. The symposium, headed by entomologists Diana Cox-Foster (Penn State University) and Jeff Pettis (USDA-ARS), will explore possible factors that may have caused honey bee deaths since 2006, such as pathogens, parasites, viruses, bacteria, disease, pesticide exposure, and breeding practices. In addition, the myths and mysteries of CCD will be discussed, as well as possible ways to combat the phenomenon.
"This symposium will introduce many of the areas of concern for bee health and Colony Collapse Disorder, and it features many of the top scientists who are tackling CCD," said Cox-Foster. "In addition, the speakers will profile many of the cutting-edge techniques that are allowing us to determine what causes are underlying declines in honey bee health."
The four-hour symposium will feature a dozen speakers, all of whom are listed at http://www.entsoc.org/ccd.htm along with the titles of their presentations. The symposium is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 in the Golden West room (near the Atlas Ballroom) at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center.
