Rockin' in the Hardware City
The franchise began in 1965 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where it was a Double-A affiliate with the Boston Red Sox. After a few moves and name changes, the team settled in New Britain, Conn., playing its home games at Beehive Field, which still stands next to the current stadium (New Britain Stadium).
In 2008, the Rock Cats established a franchise record for single game attendance, breaking 8,000 fans. The very next year, the record was broken again with more than 8,200 fans. With laser light shows, great games and team promotions, fan attendance is sure to keep growing.
The 2010 season marks the 28th Anniversary of Eastern League Baseball in New Britain. There is a rich history of baseball in the Hardware City and the Rock Cats are the Nutmeg State’s oldest, continuously operating professional sports franchise. From Cy Young Award winners to Most Valuable Players and Batting Champions to Rookie of the Year Award winners and All-Stars, New Britain has been an enormously productive foundation for Major League Baseball. More than four million fans have seen professional baseball in New Britain throughout the years.
