During the course of fmishing the 20-year review article I am writing on use of the isotope ratio procedure, I have become aware of what is apparently a fairly widespread international misinterpretation of the sentence at the end of Alternative I: “Samples with a d-13C value less negative than -23.5°/00 are considered to contain com and/or cane sugars only after confirmation with the internal standard isotope ratio method 991.41 fl. The erroneous interpretation of this is that samples MORE negative need have no further testing.
