Excerpt:

The internal standard isotope ratio analysis of honey for C-4 plant sugars (corn or cane sugars) has been accepted as official first action and is to appear in the next supplement to the Book of Methods. The procedure for isolating and purifying the honey protein which serves as the internal standard, as described therein, involves precipitation by tungstic acid, centrifugation, and extensive (5 repetitions) washing of the pellet with water to remove all carbohydrate material, with centrifugation each time to recover it. While effective, this process is very labor-intensive, especially if more than one or two samples are being analyzed. Consequently I have been looking at alternative procedures.
